Do you know what bruxism is and its associated warning signs? Bruxism is a common yet fairly serious oral health condition caused when a person grinds or clenches their teeth together. This typically happens when they are unaware or while they sleep. Treatment for bruxism can include a night guard or bite plate, but it often goes undetected for many years due to the difficulty in spotting its symptoms.

Bruxism is most commonly spotted or noticed by others, including sleep partners or roommates, who can easily notice and detect any loud teeth grinding noises that you may be producing as you sleep. Another common early warning sign of bruxism is with the teeth themselves, as they can look flat or worn, or even show signs of chipping and cracking that may be otherwise unexplainable.

Another typical warning sign of bruxism is an enhanced sensitivity with your teeth, which is often strongest after you wake up. You may also detect an increase in jaw pain or soreness. Damaged cheek tissue, a locked jaw, and discomfort much like earaches are also common signs. Bruxism is often found with TMJ disorders and sleep apnea.
