Are you afraid of the dentist? If you are, you’re not alone. In fact, many people consider even a simple cleaning an arduous task. Sadly, some patients won’t visit the dentist until they experience an emergency such as infection or tooth decay. Waiting only leads to more problems and can ever affect overall health.
Fortunately, sedation dentistry has come a long way in recent years. There are many types of sedation, ranging from nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, to oral pills. Stronger sedations can also be administered an IV in extreme cases. All of these methods work, but we recommend visiting our dentist for specific advice.
Nitrous oxide is one of the most common forms of sedation, arguably because it’s safe for children and adults and because its effects wear off after only a few minutes. Similarly, administering nitrous oxide is simple—just breath normally through a mask that covers your nose.
Another common sedation method is known as oral sedation. With oral sedation, our dentist will give you a pill to take the night before your scheduled appointment. When you arrive at our office the next morning, you’ll be given a second pill. The combination f these pills will help you feel incredibly relaxed—though if our dentist does recommend oral sedation, please have someone give you a ride home. It will not be safe to drive until after the effect has worn off.
With sedation dentistry, you’ll be able to treat your smile. If you’re interested in learning more about sedation dentist, please don’t hesitate to give Foster Dental a call at 718-673-8060. Dr. Anthony Foster and our team are excited to hear from you!
